Hi Andrew,

On combo drives, there are actually two separate laser diodes, since
the wavelength of light used to read each type of media is different.
Given that, and the fact that the computer can't boot from a CD, means
that Suse has nothing to do with it.

The CD laser has gone bad, and the DVD laser is also going bad (since
it will read "some" discs).  Your best bet is to replace the drive.
