I can also tell you that many of the people on this list would probably not have responded so nicely to such a statement. Please do your research next time, and realize that the majority, if not all, of your audience is already aware of this or doesn't need to know. That's sort of an unnecessary explanation, and doesn't really have anything to do with the shirts.
Distributions of Linux do pretty much always include GNU software with the kernel. This is absolutely true. However, it's very uncommon to refer to it as GNU/Linux anymore, not because of ignorance, but because the GNU utilities are mere components of the operating system. The Linux kernel and associated modules are what's doing all the work anyway. Everything else is just for the sake of user interaction.
You are correct in suggesting that GNU utilities are necessary for useful operation in the Linux operating system, but to suggest that Linux is a mere addition to the "GNU system" is just silly.
Now, as far as the shirts go, I'll agree that the design should be something that, at least somewhere, allows people to understand what "LUG" is. Other than that, it should be something fun that the members want to wear around, not necessarily for advertising.

I definitely like the idea of possibly getting a different design, but I feel maybe we could make something along the lines of "Linux Users Group" and shorten it onto LUG somewhere so that way others can somewhat learn about the club, since there plenty of Linux/ GNU users that do not know about us! But all ideas are open for discussion.
Side note:
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.On Fri, Jan 31, 2014 at 11:38 PM, Daniel Bierman <daniel.bierman@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
I'm wondering if I would be in the minority if I said that I for one would like to move away from the "Tux" design/concept and instead move "forward" with something a little more abstract, avantgarde, and totally NEW and refreshing. Something that would say: "This is MY LUG shirt, there are many like it, but this one is mine!
That being said, I will go along with whatever the group decides. Thanks for listening
