Re: [lug-l] Presentation Tomorrow

I won't be able to attend tonight as I'll be downstate for an interview.  Just want to make sure we (sort of thoroughly) go over everything else that needs to be done to switch over to the new server and get a solid to-do list for the server admins & anyone else. I'd like to get this done before the semester is over.

In no particular order:
  • Finalize distros/iso mirroring
  • Create 404 handler for nginx
  • Move any remaining site content over
  • Check for broken links
  • Finalize website design? http://zaphod.lug.mtu.edu currently
  • Figure out wiki
  • Figure out IRC (dwfreed expressed interest)
  • Update any DNS records (lug.mtu.edu, somethingsomething.gentoo.org?, are there more?)
  • Move IRC logging
  • Move huskybot?
  • Block china in iptables
  • Implement monitoring (zabbix, munin, nagios, other?)
  • Come up with a switchover date
  • Categorize each to whether or not it can be done "later" after the switch

I think once everything critical is done, switch DNS records so everything's pointing to zaphod. Once that propagates over a weekend or so shutdown apache and mirroring cronjobs on old servers.  Then as we get everything moved over finally, shutdown the old servers and give them back to their owners or retire/auction/repurpose.

Then we also need to discuss what we're doing with the "dev/shell" server though that can be more ideas than concrete to-do list.  Discuss retiring imhotep, I know someone expressed interest in taking/buying but I can't remember.

tl;dr server stuff.

Kaleb,
Thanks for the heads up.  Hopefully someone will step up and have something to share.  One suggestion I would have is to maybe have a "my favorite distro night" where everyone who wants to can share for a few minutes on whatever distro they are enjoying using at the moment.  What they like about it etc.  Another suggestion:  are there any members in the group that have attended previous hack-athons? that could maybe share their experiences at the event.
This is just my 2 cents.  Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

Hello all,

Hope you had a great thanksgiving break!

Anyway, I just got back and I don't have the time to figure out how to do a UEFI installation in a day, so if anyone has any alternate ideas that would be possible to make a presentation in a day or if anyone would be willing to do a presentation on short notice, I'd appreciate it.

If you have any ideas, please email me.

Thanks,
-Kaleb
