Do you like it? I didn't like the concept of one computer having complete access to all sensitive data at any given time. Also backuppc cannot work through firewalls, or across the Internet. So I went out and wrote a batch script to do pretty much all the same things as backuppc, only with pgp encryption and bzip but no pooling of files. If you get mad at backuppc, check out the script. http://dragonfort.net/dump/backup.zip It's written only for win32, because rewritting it for *nix is going to be quite simple and I haven't had a need yet to do it for anyone. Glad to hear someone else is toying with the backup solutions in the open source world. ~James
Yeah, I do like it. My tower has access to all my important data anyway, so there's no real security loss for me there. BackupPC actually can work through firewalls and across the internet, both the tar option and rsync runs over ssh, so as long as you have that port forwarded, it will work.
BackupPC will also do bzip compression (though they recommend gzip for speed reasons).
One of the biggest points for me about BackupPC is that I can restore a file from anywhere via a web browser, or I can have the program ssh to the machine and restore the file itself.
Your script does have the advantage of being able to backup locked files, which BackupPC can't do, (they probably would get a lot of flack if they had the machine kill the Outlook process upon backup in a business environment).
One of the other things I really appreciate is that you can specify intervals to keep backups (see $Conf{FullKeepCnt} = 1; at http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/BackupPC.html#what_to_backup_and_when_to_do_it ). The program will even send emails to the users (and a nightly summary to the admin) if a specified period of time has lapsed without and update being completed.
I'm gonna keep your script around though, one can never have too many options, and I haven't tested BackupPC with a Windows box as I don't own one, so I'm not sure how it works there (I've been told it works pretty well though).
