The concept of living homelessly to keep cost of living down, while maintaining an otherwise normal life. Usually done to build savings while working a job, or to get through college without student loans. Why pay rent if you don't have to?

The rest of this page will consist of documentation of specific locations, tips, and tricks, mostly based on HomelessStudent's findings (although the great thing about a wiki is that anyone can edit. If you have info to share, please share it.)

== Showers ==
There are a number of showers in campus buildings outside of the dorms, including Chem Sci, Forestry, and the GLRC. Two of these are accessible without a HuskyCard if you enter the building during the workday. I do recommend using the showers outside of normal working hours though.

The MTU Biking [https://www.mtu.edu/bike/resources/ resources page] also has a list of all the showers, but some info seems outdated. The Wayback machine shows it hasn't been updated in ages as of October 2025.

I also reviewed a University of Michigan shower for fun.
== Cooking ==
The dorms all have kitchens/kitchenettes, if you look like a student who could plausibly live in the dorms, and someone lets you in, I suspect you would have no problems. Many academic buildings have microwaves in common areas with large staff/faculty presences. These academic spaces are generally unoccupied outside of normal working hours and dorm spaces can have people at all hours.

== Sleeping ==
Haven't personally tested this one, but I've heard you can sleep in most lecture halls if you're awake before 6am. No promises though. I wouldn't sleep in the same place more than once every couple weeks though. Keep a low profile and don't ruin it for anyone else.

The M&M houses a staff lounge area with shower equip bathroom for men and woman. The lounge itself is frequently used, and the locker space for the men's bathroom have name labels on each individual locker.

===Foot Traffic and Activity===
This shower is located through a staff lounge area, and I have encountered staff here late after hours (8pm). The M&M itself does not receive a lot of general student traffic other than the study spaces, but this room's layout and furnishings do make it a popular spot for those who know. While some staff may be present for a while after standard working hours, around midnight I have seen no activity. The showers are indeed used somewhat frequently, and the lockers are also in use. The doors for the bathroom and staff lounge itself are sometimes propped open or closed. I have not noticed a frequency or schedule, so I assume this is done by staff or custodial by feel. These doors can be closed if the maxxer would like some extra privacy.

===Layout===
The entryway to the lounge is on the 2nd floor, on the west side of the building. This can also be described as the side nearest to the DOW (lower entryways) or Dillman (upper entryways). The staff room leads into the kitchen before the bathroom entrances serve as the mid point of the room and the lounge area ends it off. The Kitchen area houses a fridge, two microwaves, a coffee maker and dishes. The Lounge area has a couch and desk, a whiteboard, rectangular table and a few chairs, and a TV. The middle of the room also has two circular tables and chairs for both. The men's bathroom leads into the locker room where benches are present. There is also an extension locker room set up in the same style. This leads into the bathroom area which is set up like a standard bathroom aside from the shower extension to the left (looking in). The bathroom has sinks, a urinal, and a large stall. The shower area is split by a bench with a sign (forgor what it says) and has two showers, one with a hand bar.

There's at least two showers here, one in the men's room, one in the gender neutral. Not sure about the women's room.

Located on the first floor, as far to the east as you can get, in the north end of a hallway accessing faculty offices, past the big room with all the offices including a dean office. There is an exit if you keep going down this hallway that eventually goes out to lot 18.[[File:Signal-2025-09-05-154829 002.jpg|thumb|Men's Bathroom Shower Interior]]The shower in the men's room had evidence of being used on occasion, specifically a soap box with a partially used bar of soap in it. Maybe I'll run into whoever it is...

Haven't showered here yet, will report back when I do. I will say due to it being next to a bunch of faculty offices in a cramped hallway, be mindful.
== Showers ==

== Cooking ==
The dorms all have kitchens/kitchenettes, if you look like a student who could plausibly live in the dorms, and someone lets you in, I suspect you would have no problems. Many academic buildings have microwaves in common areas with large staff/faculty presences. These academic spaces are generally occupied outside of normal working hours and dorm spaces can have people at all hours.

== Sleeping ==
Haven't personally tested this one, but I've heard you can sleep in most lecture halls if you're awake before 6am. No promises though. I wouldn't sleep in the same place more than once every couple weeks though. Keep a low profile and don't ruin it for anyone else.

This men's bathroom/locker room is located at the south end of the Chem Sci Basement, across from the staircase. It is currently my preferred location to shower, as it is both infrequently used, and very accessible.

=== Foot Traffic and Activity ===
I've only ever seen people during my showers on weekdays, during working hours. Showering on weekends (in the middle of the day), and on weekdays the evenings (after 8pm or so) I have never seen anyone in here. The motion sensors lights have always been off, and nobody has used the bathroom with me in the shower. Very rarely do people use this bathroom, but they do on occasion. Even on the days where I shower during business hours, nobody has ever come into the locker room section.

[[File:Chem Sci Basement Shower.jpg|thumb|Shower portion of the bathroom.]]

=== Layout ===
The locker room is visible through a propped door, but the showers are blocked from view until you enter the locker room. During business hours, I have observed at most 3 people per hour use the bathroom. The lights are usually on when I enter the bathroom. The timer is about 20 minutes. The lights also give you a motion detector if someone opens the door. The shower has it's own light on a regular switch.

The shower has 3 shower heads (no stalls, one shared room), although 2 of the shower heads have broken handles. Should be operable with vice grips but I have not tested it.

The shower doesn't appear to be cleaned ever, but it has good ventilation, and with infrequent use doesn't seem to mold. Not particularly clean otherwise, but have some sandals so you don't have to touch the floor. Handle is clean, and I don't have any problem putting a shampoo bottle on the floor, or my soap box on the soap shelf. The cleaning log on the door indicates that the bathroom portion is cleaned by Janitorial staff in the AM. Not sure when, earliest I have been in here was around 11am and it was done.

The hot water takes about 5 minutes of running the one functional shower and all the sinks at worst. I usually sit on the toilet on my phone with them all running for a bit.

The WiFi is bad, but usable in the locker room half. Totally fine in the bathroom stall section. I'm writing this down and creating this page from in the shower right now.
