Welcome to the MTU LUG Wiki!

Our hope for this wiki is to be a source of information related to Michigan Tech, the Upper Peninsula, and Linux, to be used by current and prospective students at MTU (and anyone else who finds it useful).

== Who we are ==
The Linux Users Group is a student organization at Michigan Tech that was established in 2001 to further students' knowledge of Linux/UNIX based operating systems and discuss technological advancements in Operating Systems.

Each week, we gather to discuss current news about tech and open-source software, after which a member will give a presentation about a technical topic (typically pertaining to Linux, FOSS, or computer protocols) that's different each week.

Whether you're a GNU Wizard running a custom distro on your laptop or a total Linux beginner who hasn't ever touched a shell, our mission is to provide an environment for anyone to learn more about using Linux on their gadgets and gizmos.

Sjwhitak: My original comments specific to how I was describing vim; that is, I found that basic vim really isn't faster than a GUI editor, but if you have a good set of plugins and macros, vim works great.

= Beginner's guide =
We talked about vim and how to set it up. Basically type

and follow this. You'll learn the basic hotkeys.
{{Note|If all you're using is basic vim, it isn't the best. Vim has decreased in popularity as people move towards GUI editors and IDEs, but it still has a place due to its ubiquity in *nix systems and a requirement on systems without a GUI such as a server. Additionally, when using macros and plugins, vim really shows its power.}}

== .vimrc file ==
To edit the defaults file:

Inside vim, typing <code>:source ~/.vimrc</code> will adjust these defaults.

Line <code>1</code> gives syntax coloring for each file.

Line <code>2</code> sets an autoindenting where <code>tab</code> will be replaced with 4 spaces, and backspacing will remove 4 spaces. The <code>smarttab</code> will auto-indent when writing for loops, and <code>autoindent</code> will keep the new line's tab spacing.

Line <code>3</code> gives line numbers on the left side of vim. <code>relativenumber</code> gives a relative distance between each line which is beneficial for commands like <code>j</code> and <code>k</code> to go up N lines easily.

Line <code>4</code> works with searching in files. <code>incsearch</code> will jump to the first instance immediately while typing. <code>wildmenu</code> shows the files while trying to <code>:edit <file></code> or <code>:split <file></code>.

Line <code>5</code> sets backspace to delete lines nicely instead of moving backwards.

== Plugins ==

Plugins are the only point at which vim is more usable than VSCode. I use [https://github.com/junegunn/vim-plug vim-plug] and the [https://github.com/junegunn/vim-plug#unix install steps] are a single line.

At this point, add these lines to your <code>.vimrc</code>:

Peter from IT Oxygen came by because David was dressed up as Tux and kept telling people to join LUG. Peter came by to ask if we could collaborate and clean up our server rack for more space. Since we also share the rack with HARC (Ben Bistline), we exchanged emails to get us to clean everything up.

We went to the GLRC to look at our rack and noticed that our RAID system for our mirrors server may not even be turned on.

We got Marvin up and running! That beast is less powerful than a raspberry pi 3 with the power output of a modern server. There was an old drive we plugged in from Marvin but it had LVM and we couldn't figure out how to get it to work, mostly because we wanted to go to Culver's and get some concrete mixers. The concrete mixers were good. The drive could wait.

We got our t-shirts this week too. Anyone reading this who hasn't gotten their t-shirts, you better get them!! >:(

Steven tried to follow the presentation that [https://gitlab.com/osu-lug/activities/presentations/-/blob/main/rm-rf-resurrection/notes.md OSULUG] did, but he wasn't able to compile a shared library so that bash could use it as a builtin.

If that could've been done, we could've rebuilt Linux using only <code>echo</code>.

I was supposed to do this Virtual Oasis thing, but not a single person showed up, and I heard that USG never advertised it to new students, so that probably was a good reason why no one showed up.
