HuskyBot is our adorably stupid IRC bot. He is based upon the abandoned [http://www.infobot.org/ Infobot] codebase, although he has some rather extensive mods at this point.

My name is Jon DeVree. I graduated with a degree in Computer Science from Michigan Tech in 2006. I was also one of the LUG server admins during my time at MTU.

My main field of interest is computer security and occassionally the LUG even convinces me to write an [[WEP|article]] on it. I run [[Debian]] Linux on my computers. I have also written some [http://tesla.homelinux.net/projects/nfsclient/ toys] that aren't allowed on the MTU computer network.

Another hobby is being in an edit-war with [[User:aragirn|aragirn]] about whether or not [[:Image:Cimg0874.jpg|this]] picture should be in his profile on the wiki. In an empty jesture he protected his user page from edits... Silly aragirn, I used to have Wiki Ops.

The Media Access Control address, commonly called the Hardware Address or Physical Address, is the [[layer 2]] address used in Ethernet to uniquely identify a network node.

The name is a misnomer; modern cards and drivers allow the MAC address to be easily altered, so use as a security measure is limited. In the past, network access and software licenses were restricted based on this address.

[[Michigan Technological University|MTU]]'s [[ResNet]] uses the MAC address to associate a person with their computer.

Maximal Transfer Unit

Maximal Transfer Unit is the largest possibl [[layer 2]] frame size on a network.

Ethernet uses a 1500-byte in the 10Mbps and 100Mbps forms, and commonly uses 9000-byte MTUs in 1000Mbit (Gigabit) ethernet. Ethernet MTus can be as high as 16384 bytes.

PPPoE connections and other tunnels will often use a MTU of 1492, to accout for the tunnel overhead.

Other (less common) MTU sizes:
*16 Mbps Token Ring: 17914
*4 Mbps Token Ring: 4464
*SONET: 4460
*FDDI: 4352
*X.25: 576

ATM uses a cell size of 53 bytes, but the LANE layer on top of it emulates a larger MTU.
