Ideas for improvement of LUG order and structure:
Post rough meeting structure on wiki mainpage
Use the wiki to keep track of meeting minutes and to post discussion topics before the meeting
Wiki editing instead of IRC on projector
Laptops are not an issue during meetings
Shut up when someone else is talking
Potentially elect a new treasurer

Officers are here to administer lug (administrative tasks)
We're facilitators, not here to keep you entertained.
Get involved.

Weekly meetings take effort to put together

Presentations on shell commands?
Simple preparation
helps people

We will hold presentations if people offer to give them.
Presentation signup on the wiki
5-15 minute presentations
Get approved by an officer
Make a wiki version for posterity

Hold help sessions in Fisher Hall
Experienced linux user sits in the fisher lobby on a weekend, just to help people

Command line presentations
Find
Grep
Locate
Rules for use of sekhmet, the LUG shell server:
# Your initial password will be set to expire immediately on first login, use a decent password for this account.
# Follow all MTU Computer (and Network) Use Policies -- if it is against the school rules, do not do it.
# Do not piss off the server admin -- admins are our friends.
# Be courteous with use -- high-resource use is OK, but moderate it so others get a share.
# Keep only volatile data on sekhmet -- no backups are made, and data may be lost at any time.
# Keep your home directory tidy -- a 36GB drive is dedicated to /home, and quotas will be instated if needed.
# Compiling stuff for your own use is OK, but it is better if we can get it from a repo -- if you want software installed, ask an admin.

The LUG currently runs a Jabber server. Jabber is an open source instant messaging service which relies on independent servers. Once you have registered on a Jabber server, you can send messages to users on most other Jabber servers.

Once you've registered with LUG, your screenname will look like: foo@lug.mtu.edu.

To register, simply open up a client that supports Jabber (Pidgin is great!) and add a new account. Then just enter the required information (see picture).

----
</div>
Valarauca, also known as Cody Laeder, is a member of the Michigan Tech's Linux User Group. He is a first year majoring in CS and Mathematics (both general).

The Name
Valarauca is the englishized version of the Quenya name Valaraukar.

Its History
Valaraukar translates literally into Demon God. Demons in Tolkien's fiction were of the maiar, the same order as Gandelf or Sauron, they humbled them selves to Melkor (latter Morgoth), and became the Balrogs. Most of the Balrogs were destoyed in the War of Lamps that took place some three ages (some 12 thousand years) before the Silmarillion, they Balrogs were cast into the cast into the former fortress and they lay there for the three ages until Melkor/Morgoth's return to Arda. Valarukar's name was changed by the elvish (who kept the history) following the first battle in the war of jewels. In this battle Valaraukar/Gothmog battle with Feanor at the Gates of Angbad under the first rising of the newly created moon (which presided the sun). Gothmog mortally wounded Feanor and stayed the Quendi advance on Angbad.

Its pronunciation
Valaraukar is far from being pronouced. Quenya is not a spoken langauge as it's subtle complexities make it so. Valarauca can be pronounced, and is done as such; Val - ah - R - ah - u (as the German butch) - k - ah, if I am correct as an improper noun the stress would be placed in the second vowel of the second syllable, make the standard Quenya u, into a uh. As you can see the pronunciation of Quenya words is very difficult, and therefore is almost never taught / learned.

Me
As I stated I am a Math and Computer Science major at Michigan Tech. I graduated in the year 2009. Beside LUG I am also a proud member of the Michigan Tech pep band.

Contacting Me
I can be contacted by email at wclaeder@mtu.edu if I feel that our conversation needs a faster means of communication I will provide you with the non-physical means to do so (phone number, skype name, ect.)

Linux and Me
I primarily use Ubuntu, for its easy use, which I enjoy to my general laziness.

Projects
* Project Forge
* CS Homework
* Stuff for Robotics

Project Forge
Project Forge is the code name for a yet to be named MMORTS (Massive Multi-player On-line Real Time Strategy) game. I am currently working on the basic libraries of the game engine. Most of the game core existed on my home computers hard drive but it had to be inputted line by line into IDLE. The currently versions 0.0a will be coded into java, then latter translated into C++ if necessary (which It will become once connectivity, and 3d graphics are needed).

CS Homework
I work on my CS homework much like integrating sensors into robots; with a method, but doing it as fast as possible, this normally tend to keep me up all saturday night working out the final version and dropping tons of 'features' (things I do to challenge my self), to make sure I get the A.

Stuff for Robotics
As one of the two programming mentors for team 2604, both of who understand the advance framework of LabView, seeing as our only student programmer as the of the present is really bad the programming period I can foresee me working on alot programming

Lug Wiki
I am on/off working on editing the wiki so that we can use it as a repository for information current projects
* History of Linux
* Basic Linux stuff
* Basic info on distro
* Creating a Man category for several difficult to use aspects in linux

We have requested a table for the 2010 Involvement Fair. Usually, we ask for a table near PFRC to make things fun. If you have something to show off that you think will draw attention, bring it. We also need a couple volunteers to answer questions and take email addresses. We'll have access to a power outlet, and if we're lucky, a projector, but don't count on that. Otherwise, we have our own big monitors and shit we can bring.

The EERC Tree (1871?-2010) lived in front of the EERC building. The EERC Tree has regularly won most elections like Winter Carnival
Queen, Homecoming Queen, and USG officer positions. Much to the disappointment of those who voted for it, the EERC
Tree was never actually allowed to win elections.
During the month of April 2003, the EERC Tree was decorated with CDs and other objects in protest of a 98 billion
dollar lawsuit against Joe Nievelt by the RIAA.
On August 17, 2010, the EERC Tree was cut down. The following letter was published as explanation.
The Leaning Tree Comes Down

by John Gagnon, promotional writer

The Leaning Tree, also known as the EERC Tree, was cut down early Tuesday morning, just after dawn. It was ailing, mostly brown instead of green. A big, native white pine, it graced the center of campus for who knows how long.

&quot;We cut it down before it fell down,&quot; says John Rovano, director of Facilities.

Rovano says he might have to find someone to coordinate how the wood is used, for the downed tree yielded several logs that are in demand. Rovano says he's receiving requests for using the wood for benches in the Memorial garden; maybe a wood sculpture for the campus; or a decorative element in a fraternity. &quot;It'll have more of a life after it's gone than before,&quot; Rovano jests.

He doesn't know whether the tree's location in the middle of the lower campus was &quot;intentional or accidental.&quot; But, he adds, &quot;We'll make its replacement a centerpiece.&quot;

The Grounds crew, then, will plant another white pine in its place. Facilities will bring water for irrigation and electricity for lighting, perhaps year-round. &quot;We'll do the space some justice,&quot; Rovano says.

Forester/Lecturer James Schmierer (SFRES) says the tree is a remnant of extensive stands of large trees in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. He calls it &quot;a long-lived species,&quot; reaching 300 years and more.

&quot;Anytime you have an isolated tree surrounded by hardscape, it's a challenging environment,&quot; he says. Hazard tree removal? &quot;Welcome to the world of urban forestry,&quot; he advises. He is gratified that it'll be replaced by another white pine.

He guesses that some people might be disappointed about cutting down this particular pine. (Just check out the Facebook and Twitter accounts to read comments from students and alumni.)

&quot;People get sentimentally attached to big, old trees,&quot; he says. &quot;Sometimes the emotions get overwhelming.&quot;

He sums up the situation as a balance between safety and visual impact.

&quot;I've walked by that tree many times,&quot; he says. &quot;It's a shame to see it go. But I put on my safety hat and I understand. There are people on campus who are responsible for safety. That can involve unpopular decisions, but you can't go against your mandate--your duties.&quot;

Over the years the Leaning Tree has garnered votes in queen competitions; it has been the subject of calculations and bets on when it would fall over. It was Tech's own Tower of Pisa.

Its start was modest, its life long, and its end abrupt. Once a landmark, it will now be a hallmark of the passage of time and the cycle of life, something that grew along with the institution. Mark Dion, a 1983 alumnus from Houston, says, &quot;I recall the tree's big beauty. Such is life--an ending and a beginning.&quot;

Mike Hyslop (SFRES) has a cross section--called &quot;a cookie&quot;--of the tree. Using software, he will be able to count the rings to within a year or two. The big question: Is the tree as old as Tech?

Stay tuned.
&lt;/code&gt;

The tree has been dated by Hyslop and is discussed in this article written by John Gagnon:
http://www.admin.mtu.edu/urel/ttoday/previous.php?issue=20100909&amp;utm_source=email&amp;utm_content=20100909#1

According to the grounds manager, the tree will be replaced with a 12-13' white pine within a few weeks.
We sure have alot of orphaned pages. They started with links from the main page but then kind of vanished as they were filled out. We should really fix that.
Well...
Where do you suggest we put them? We can make a page that just lists everything, but that's kinda stupid - we'd have to update it every time a new page was created.

IMO, this is what the search is for. In all truth though, we should try to tie them all into some other page as they fit.
Orpaned pages should be linked if possible.
A term describing high-speed internet access. As defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), any connection faster then 200kbps is considered broadband, while the technical definition is any signal with a wide bandwidth (as relating to its radio-frequency properties, regardless of the data transfer rate).

The usual example of broadband internet is via a cable modem or DSL.

In common usage, service provided by Ethernet is considered broadband, although technically, Ethernet uses narrowband signaling.

Broadband internet access in Houghton, Michigan is available from Charter Communications and SBC.
