LUG has presumably done LAN Parties of some sort since its inception. Meeting minutes from the past do mention LAN Parties quite frequently. This article is instead about the semi-formal, recurring event started in Fall 2026 by Freya, because as far as I can tell the org forgot about LAN Parties for a long time, and this is the first time they have been properly formalized as far as I can tell.

Format

LAN Parties, at the time of writing (on the night after the second one, October 18th, 2026), are an event held every two weeks on Sunday, from 2-4pm in the current standard meeting room. One or two games (likely only one going forth) are chosen and hosted on Shell. Plans exist to move game hosting to a permanent VM, however for now this is the easiest and most accessible way to host.

Games that are played are exclusively free and open-source games, both because of the org being a Linux group (duh) and so people aren't dropping 10 bucks on a game they've never heard of just to participate.

  • LAN Party 1 (the pilot event): October 4th 2026
    • Games: Xonotic and SuperTuxKart
    • Host: Freya
    • Notes: Pretty damn good, had small turnout but it was a blast. Planned to make these semi-weekly from then on.
  • LAN Party 2: October 18th 2026
    • Game: Mindustry
    • Host: Freya
    • Notes: Far better turnout, popular enough that the next party will also be Mindustry. A custom map was designed for this session.
  • LAN Party 3: November 1st 2026
    • Game: Mindustry
    • Host: Freya
    • Notes: Ran through a few levels of campaign mode. Promo images were made using PICO-8
