Internet Protocol. Specifies addressing at layer 3. Usually used in conjunction with TCP and UDP.

Currently, two forms are available.

IPv4 is the most common, with a 32-bit addressing space.

IPv6 deprecates IPv4, although adoption is slow. IPv6 uses a 128-bit addressing space, and includes autoconfiguration and IPSec.
