Failing that, the Mint .iso is a hybrid image that can just be written directly to the USB drive. The bottom of this howto suggests using win32-image-writer to accomplish that. http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744

I've never personally used it - so I can't vouch for it, but it looks easy to use.
As long as you're able to boot to the usb, this should take care of everything else.
Note - you might want to plug your laptop into an ethernet cable during installation. You may have better luck, but I had to research/download/compile drivers for my wireless network interface card.--Thanks, and have a fantastic day!
