Your expertise is needed.....
The Women in Computing Sciences (WiCS) organization has talked about doing an AI Game Programming Competition here at Tech for a while now. Since this is a fairly large scale project, we're asking if members of other organizations would be interested in working on this. Here are the basics of what we'd like to do:
Time frame: We want to run the competition before the end of the semester.
Competition Framework: The idea is based on the MechMania programming competition held at UIUC every year (
http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference/2006/mechmania_history.php). First, we create a storyline and develop a game based on that. We'll program in Java. The game will be client/server and turn based. Teams write an AI client for their player(s). Each game goes until one team wins (however that is determined) or for a certain number of turns. The rules of the game are kept secret until the API is released, a small number of days before the competition. The competition is held as a double elimination tournament, pitting the AI's against each other.
Intended Audience: Anyone who can read an API and program in Java. We may invite NMU students to come.
What we need:
Programmers --- to program the server in Java
Graphics --- we want this to look cool
Game Development -- we have to figure out the story and rules for the game
Promotion -- we need to make posters, hype it up, and get the word out
Organizers -- we need to reserve rooms, order food, get prizes, t-shirts, etc
If you would like to help out with any of this, please e-mail WiCS Chairperson, Janae Foss (jnfoss@xxxxxxxxx), by this Friday, February 23. Based on interest we will determine whether or not we will be able to do this.
