Remembering PINE

Maybe someone can refresh my memory a bit since I've been out of the loop
with PINE for a while.

I've got a POP server setup and working, and I've just configured my PINE
client to connect to the server. When I open PINE, it prompts me for my
password. I supply it and am told that I have five messages. I go to my
inbox and all five are marked as new. I delete two test emails I had sent
out previously, expunge them, read the other three (to remove the 'N'),
then quit. When I re-enter PINE and supply my password, I have three
emails. All is well and good here until I open my inbox -- all three are
now marked again as new emails.

I could have sworn that I've set this up before such that it would mark
emails as read and saved that. Do I need to configure something in PINE to
do this, or am I stuck with this behavior as part of the fact that I'm
using PINE for POP access?
