Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is used in networks such as Ethernet to associate a [[layer 3]] address (such as an IP address) to a [[layer 2]] address (such as an ethernet [[MACMedia Access Control]] address).
 
Also available is RARP, or Reverse ARP, used in network-booting of older equipment that does not use DHCP or BootP.
