According to a Chinese dude who paid for Hydata SCSITools in another ServeTheHome thread, this program can also send the command to unlock the drives and flash the firmware.
The free version contains commands to write new firmware to the drive in a similar way to Niagara, but does nothing particularly special and does not defeat the firmware lock. However, it also has a function called "Super Firmware Download", which on use states it is in the licensed version only. The free binary does not appear to contain the implementation of this function. It seems this function is implemented on a per-model basis, and so may be using vendor specific commands [https://www.hydata.com/index.php/new/index/id/42.html]
A SCSITools license is $2800. Same as with the Russian dude, at that price it makes more sense to buy different drives.
