Most Linux+GNU distributions don't really support touch screens as well as Windows does since they aren't as prevalent. I have herd good things about touch screen support on Ubuntu (especially because they are releasing a mobile version of their OS soon) as well as decent touch screen support on Arch.

You could probably just disable it too, seeing as how touch screen integration isn't "too" much better.

As for setting up Linux Mint Automatic updates, you could probably write a simple bash script to do it.  Don't forget to check out the official forums first before asking others to help.  There is tons of documentation about "Petra" (LM 16) on the internet.  http://forums.linuxmint.com/.  Web searches will be your best friend.  Good luck with your new installation !  If you do come to LUG with any of your issues I could possibly help you in person since I have a decent amount of experience with Linux Mint.

I now have Mint, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the touchscreen: scrolling only works when I click-and-drag the scrollbars, and it doesn't left-click when I press & hold. I can't figure out how to set it up to do that. Also, how do I set up automatic updates?

Looks like the problem was a faulty burn to the flash drive. Mint is
installing now. Thanks for all of your help! :)
