Re: firmware update

It is not that the drive does not work in linux. It burns CDs perfectly.
It is just that the media that it supported 3 years ago when I bought it
is no longer manufactured, and without a firmware update it won't
recognize the new media. You may not have a problem because you purchased
the drive later in time than I did, and it had the firmware update already
installed. This is akin to not being able to install replacement spark
plugs in your car because the threads changed. Its not that the old media
didn't work, or that new media doesn't work, or that the drive doesn't
work, it is just that the company deliberatly chooses to ignore a
mainstream part of the market that is growing, and deny support to that
market segment. As such, in the future, I'm going to let the company know
by voting with my pocketbook and buying elsewhere. I also urge you to do
the same for the same reasons. If this was not the case, or if in the
future Liteon decided to change its stance on user preferences, then I'd
probably again buy a Liteon drive. Liteon manufactures hardware, as such
they should be committed to supporting their hardware in all environments,
not just one. There is no software aspect to purchasing a burner drive
(especially OEM from newegg), so the manufacturer should be committed to
the customer's decisions about where to operate the drive, not committed
to forcing the company's view on to the customer.

And as far as your statement about checking compatibility before buying; I
did check it. At that time it worked. However it no longer works. This
is what irks me. And I cannot make it start working with out taking it
out of the machine, finding a windows machine that I have root access to,
opening that box, temporarily installing the drive there, and booting
windows to install the firmware update. All this to undo the process and
put it back into my machine. Anyone know where to find a Windows Live CD?
And don't ask me to install the drive permanently in a windows machine so
that I can bog down my network (100 MBit) moving 4.9 GB of data around
every time I need to burn a dvd.

YMMV. As always this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Best Regards,
Dan
