Re: [lug-l] Request help for install

No, my laptop does not have a CD drive. I have an external CD drive I could plug in via USB, but wouldn't that just have the same problems as booting from a USB flash drive?

I plan to make a second attempt Saturday afternoon with another friend. Thank you all for your suggestions so far; if you have any others, I'd love to hear them. I don't want to break my shiny new laptop! :(

Until your issue is resolved, here are somethings you can do in the meantime:

1. Install virtualbox ( https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ) and run Mint as a VM. Be sure to install vbox additions ( virtual box additions ( there should be a tutorial for it somewhere) ). Even if you're computer isn't a super high end beast, it should be fine - just no fullscreen HD video.

2. Post your computer model number and such so one of us can do some more specific research.

3. Ask Kaleb when the next meeting is and bring your laptop then

4. See if anyone is willing to spend some physical time trying to diagnose it.

Katherine,

Do you have a DVD drive?  Can you boot from that?

Is the inability to boot from USB a hardware/software issue covered under warranty? I don't know when I'd find time to return it, though.

I've seen a Sony Vaio which simply COULD NOT boot from USB.  You may
have one of these crippled computers.  Since you bought it with
Windows 8.1... chances are good.
